Heavy House Cleaning Tip

Changing the Routine

Regular house cleaning is something most people do on a daily or weekly basis but heavy cleaning is left for a specific time, usually until spring, and takes a lot more work and planning. Spring cleaning has become a term used to describe when someone is doing their heavy cleaning.  For me, heavy cleaning is easier to do in late summer and early fall. The weather is more cooperative during that time and it helps prepare for the visiting relatives during fall and winter holidays.  Everyone has their system for cleaning but there are options that can change things up and make the house cleaning more interesting than a dreaded chore that has to be done.

For those of us who do find house cleaning to be a chore rather than a joy; one thing that can be used to try to trick your brain into thinking you are about to have fun than is to buy new cleaning supplies. There are always ‘improved’ and new products that you might have considered trying and this would be a good opportunity.  It may sound silly but shopping can be inspirational when trying to get in the right mindset to do heavy cleaning

It’s also a good idea to choose one room at a time to work on cleaning.  If you try to do too many rooms at one time it can get overwhelming and make it hard to finish. It also helps to inspire you to work on more rooms when you see the difference in one completed room.  Once you choose the room you want to start with, take a look and see if may be you want to repaint while you’re working on that room. It can really brighten up a room to add fresh paint with the heavy cleaning and while since you are already moving things around; it’s a good time to get it done.

Once you have decided what room you want to clean, the next step is to decide how to tackle the room. Most people have a process they use to get things moved around but there might be a way that would be more fun and interesting.  I recommend emptying everything from the room but the large furniture pieces so you have the opportunity to pull them away from the walls and clean thoroughly.

The things that you take out of the room, including closets, you can put on the back deck or patio. You can even spread plastic or sheets and put the things in the yard. You’ll want to check the local forecast for any weather problems before you start. I recommend having a trash can, some extra bags, a few boxes and maybe even some yard sale stickers. This will give you the chance to go through everything and decide what you want to take back into the house.

Anyone who lives in an apartment can accomplish the same effect by making the dining area the central location to put everything. Using the table to dust things, decide what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of will work just as well as putting things outside.

If you’re like me at all, you will find things that you knew you had but haven’t seen in a long time. With any luck you will find the ‘black hole’ in the house that has been hiding nearly everything you have been looking for since the last time you did a heavy cleaning.

As you go through things, it helps to think about whether or not you need or use them before taking them back in the house. Some things have sentimental value and need to be held onto but others may be things you have just picked up over time and no longer need or use. If these things are in good working condition or you no longer use them, you can donate them to charity or put a price sticker on them and gather things for a yard sale.

When you have gone through everything for that room, dusted, swept and put the things back that you are keeping; it’s time to take a look at what you have left outside. Throw away any remaining trash and either price the rest for a yard sale or box it up for donating. It does help inspire you to get rid of excess things if you think that someone else may be able to use them or that you might make some money from them.

One thing that might make cleaning easier in the future is to start a box in a closet when you run across things that you no longer need or use. Just put the items in the box and once it’s full either donate the items or add them to the things you have saved for a yard sale.

If you do this for each room of the house, you will notice a big difference in the amount of space you have and your normal cleaning will be easier. Heavy cleaning is still a chore no matter how you do it but tackling the chore this way will allow you to really see how much stuff you have added over time and how much of it you really need as opposed to things you just haven’t had the time or the interest to get rid of between heavy cleaning days. Changing your routine may inspire you to get everything done that you have put off until heavy cleaning.

Advice for men : take pictures.

Use your digital camera to take stills or movie pans of the room. It is simply amazing how easy it is to forget where things (especially small things) were placed. You may not think it's all that important, but your wife probably does.
