Unemployment Extensions End
72Unemployment Extensions End
Without action from US Congress all unemployment extensions will end on November 30th for the benefit week ending December 4th. A large percentage of the 15 million Americans will lose unemployment benefits on that date with no income available to replace that loss or support their families. This holiday season will be incredibly difficult for those families to even pay their monthly bills much less add holiday expenses to the budget. Charities and assistance agencies will run out of funds earlier than they normally would with added numbers of people who are in need this year. It is possible that this may be the hardest holiday season for some families in recent memory and the upcoming year does not appear to be any easier.
Assisting Others
One aspect of the holiday season that many people embrace is counting their blessings. Most people are thankful for the health of their children and family. They appreciate that they have a roof over their head, warm clothes and food to eat. People that are grateful for those things look to help others during the holiday season. This helps them understand how blessed they are and try to share that with others.
Help can be volunteering at a soup kitchen, donating toys, finding someone in need to donate outgrown coats to or anything that makes them feel like they are helping others. There are many places needing assistance locally that are willing to except help in any form. The warmth and love a person feels when they are helping others cannot be matched and makes their blessings much more special.
Needing Assistance
This year more families will need assistance in many ways that they will feel overwhelmed and not know what to do or which way to go. Families will need assistance with food, clothing, heating bills, holiday gifts. Many of the families needing assistance will have no income at all. Every facet of their lives will be dependent on what they can come up with in the way of assistance, odd jobs or other means to take care of their families.
With the loss of a job they may have had for years asking for assistance is not something they are used to and as they learn where to go for assistance, agencies will be reaching out to the public for assistance in helping these families.
Without the creation of new jobs, this type of need will last well into 2011. Helping people learn new job skills will take some time and the families will need help in the meantime. The loss of extended unemployment will make it hard for many of the 15 million people currently drawing unemployment to make ends meet from month to month; even when there aren’t holidays to worry about. This will be the time when people need to pull together and help each other through this recession.
